Starlink announces new generation V2 satellite: providing 5G speed from space and increasing data density by 100 times

On March 3rd, Starlink announced on the X platform that Starlink Mobile's next generation satellite will provide 5G speed from space, with a data density 100 times higher than the current V1 generation satellite, and a remarkable performance upgrade. "V2 satellite will seamlessly support streaming media playback, Internet browsing, high-speed applications and voice calls, just like connecting to the ground network," the official said. It is reported that Starlink Mobile, formerly known as the "Direct to Cell" service, has recently completed its name change and currently covers 32 countries across six continents, enabling satellite to mobile data, voice, and SMS communication. Compared with traditional mobile service providers, the core advantage of this service is the ability to connect anytime, anywhere. In emergency situations, the stability of space communication is much better than that of ground networks. However, limited by the existing V1 satellite, the current service can only support lightweight data and SMS. The upgrade of the V2 satellite has become the key to breaking through this limitation. To ensure the service experience, Starlink expects ground operator partners such as T-Mobile in the United States to achieve seamless switching between satellite and ground networks, ensuring uninterrupted and non degraded services. According to the plan, with the deployment of V2 satellite, the peak user speed is expected to reach 150Mbps. At present, Space X plans to launch up to 15000 V2 satellites, but some V2 Mini satellites have already been launched first to fill the current service gap. Foreign media predicts that V2 service may undergo its first testing in early 2027. It is reported that Starlink Mobile will be officially commercially launched in July 2025. This upgrade of V2 satellite will promote the leap of satellite Internet from basic communication to high-speed experience, and also make Musk's space 5G blueprint further.
