Archer has surged! Boeing sells its flying taxi and drone business in exchange for approximately 20% equity in Archer

Wall Street observations 11 Aug 2026 17:53

Boeing is bundling and selling multiple cutting-edge aviation technology departments in exchange for the strategic space needed to focus on its core business.

According to a joint statement by both parties on Monday, Boeing will sell its Wisk, SkyGrid, and Insitu divisions to Archer Aviation, a California based flying taxi developer. These divisions focus on the design and manufacturing of unmanned aerial vehicles and the development of air traffic management systems.

As part of the transaction, Boeing will acquire approximately 20% equity in Archer and enter into a technology sharing agreement with the latter, retaining the right to use Wisk's core autonomous flight technology for its existing and next-generation commercial and defense aircraft projects.

The news stimulated Archer's stock price to rise as much as 23% during the trading session, but then fell back slightly, maintaining an increase of about 11% as of press time; Boeing's stock price remained largely unchanged.

Bloomberg industry research analyst George Ferguson pointed out in a research report that this acquisition "; Accelerate Archer's layout in the fields of autonomous flight and artificial intelligence, while reshaping its shareholder structure; And it may give Archer an advantage over its competitor Joby Aviation.

Boeing focuses on slimming down and divesting non core assets

This divestment is a continuation of Boeing's strategy to revitalize its core business. This century old aviation giant has been deeply mired in quality issues and management turnover in recent years, and is concentrating resources on restructuring its commercial and defense main businesses. Competitor Airbus also suspended its research and development plans related to flying taxis last year.

Boeing will become a wholly-owned shareholder of Wisk in 2023. Wisk started from the Google ecosystem and is a startup company focused on autonomous air taxis. Boeing had the idea of leveraging Silicon Valley to lay out the future of autonomous flight.

Now that it has been transferred along with SkyGrid and Insitu, it marks Boeing's complete exit from this layout - but through a technology sharing agreement, Boeing can still apply Wisk's autonomous flight technology to its commercial and defense platforms, strategically retaining the technological dividends.

Archer: A few survivors of the reshuffling of the eVTOL industry

Archer's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft track is currently undergoing industry consolidation.

After the epidemic, a large number of eVTOL companies went public with the help of the wave of Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs), and subsequently exited after burning billions of dollars in research and development funds. Archer is one of the few developers who still adhere to the market.

The injection of Boeing assets this time is expected to strengthen Archer's competitive position in technology accumulation and capital strength, enabling it to occupy a more advantageous position in the competition with Joby Aviation. Joby currently has a partnership with L3Harris Technologies.

However, the FAA airworthiness certification for Archer's flagship aircraft Midnight is not expected to be implemented until next year at the earliest, and the commercialization process still faces time constraints.

Policy boost industry expectations

The progress at the regulatory and policy levels has provided certain support for the eVTOL industry.

In an executive order issued by the Trump administration in 2025, eVTOL testing was listed as a "; The dominant position of unmanned aerial vehicles in the United States; Strategic priorities. Earlier this year, the FAA launched the eVTOL integration pilot project, conducting experimental operations of advanced air travel vehicles at eight locations across the United States.

The clear signals at the policy level have to some extent boosted market expectations for the commercialization prospects of eVTOL, and provided a favorable external environment for Archer to expand its scale and accelerate research and development through this transaction.
