Google is further expanding its presence in the field of Physical AI. According to the company's announcement on Wednesday, Intrinsic, a subsidiary of Alphabet that focuses on industrial robot software, will officially merge into Google. This move aims to leverage Google's core capabilities in artificial intelligence and cloud computing to accelerate the commercialization of physical AI technology.
Although Intrinsic will continue to exist as an independent entity, it will closely collaborate with the Google DeepMind team in the future and deeply integrate Google's Gemini large model and cloud service resources. It is worth noting that Alphabet has not disclosed the specific funding arrangements or acquisition prices involved in this integration.
Intrinsic was originally born in Alphabet's famous "Lunar Factory" X Laboratory. After five years of research and development, it "graduated" in 2021 and became an independent operating company under Alphabet. Other companies incubated from X during the same period include autonomous driving company Waymo and drone delivery service provider Wing. Since its independence in 2021, Intrinsic has been led by Wendy Tan White as CEO and has rapidly expanded strategically. In April 2022, Intrinsic announced the acquisition of another robotics software company, Vicarious. Although the transaction amount has not been disclosed, the latter has previously received approximately $250 million in financing from well-known investors, including Jeff Bezos. Later that same year, Intrinsic acquired multiple for-profit business units under the non-profit organization Open Robotics, further solidifying its position in the Robot Operating System (ROS) ecosystem.
However, high-speed expansion has not been smooth sailing. In January 2023, Intrinsic announced a 20% layoff. However, a few months later, the company launched its first product, Flowstate, a software platform aimed at non professional robot developers, aiming to lower the programming threshold for industrial robots and echo its mission of "popularizing robot technology".
Since then, Intrinsic has continued to optimize its technology stack, enhance its simulation capabilities, and will release its self-developed Intrinsic Vision visual AI model by the end of 2025. In October 2025, the company reached a joint venture agreement with global electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn to jointly develop universal intelligent robots, with the goal of achieving full process automation in the electronics manufacturing industry.
This merger with Google marks a new stage of resource integration for Intrinsic. Tan White stated in the company blog, 'Combining Google's outstanding artificial intelligence and infrastructure capabilities, we will unleash the potential of physical AI for a wider range of manufacturing enterprises and developers.'. This will fundamentally change the economic model and operational methods of production, promoting truly advanced manufacturing. ”
Analysis points out that Google's move conforms to the current strategic consensus of the technology industry on physical AI. Many industry leaders, including Nvidia CEO Renxun Huang and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, believe that physical AI is the next key path for artificial intelligence technology to achieve value closure and large-scale applications. By integrating Intrinsic, Google not only strengthens its physical world tentacles beyond AI underlying technologies, but also provides systematic solutions for the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry.
